One of the key issues we showcased at the recent Village Fair was Transition Village Lane Cove. Transition Towns (or Villages) is an international movement gaining momentum with many Australian communities already on board. Basically Lane Cove ALIVE would like to join this growing number of pioneering communities who are working at grass roots level to address the challenges of PEAK OIL and CLIMATE CHANGE.

What are these communities doing?
These communities are taking an integrated and inclusive approach to reducing their carbon footprint and increasing their ability to withstand the fundamental shifts that will accompany significant changes in global energy use and supply. The resultant evolution of a Transition Network and Transition Towns is about exploring and implementing strategies for transitioning to a lower energy future and to greater levels of community resilience.
What is Lane Cove ALIVE’s involvement?
We think this is a great idea and one that could be very well received in our community. At this stage we are looking for creativity, practical ideas and involvement from people in this local area to help create local solutions to improve quality of life by enabling the much needed transition to a sustainable, low-carbon lifestyle and economy – no prior experience required but enthusiasm is a must!
With the combined commitment of the resources of Lane Cove ALIVE, Lane Cove Council and hopefully other existing community groups working on environmental and sustainability agendas, we believe we already have a strong framework to get going!
What are some examples?
* Localising food production by creating urban gardens
* Descentralising energy infrastructure through support for more passive and renewable energy sources such as solar hot water and photo voltaic panels
* Supporting local businesses and supplies to create more employment opportunities and sustain the Lane Cove economy
* Encouraging local alternatives transport eg. School walking bus, cycling and community cars
